Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, introduced its latest artificial intelligence model, Grok 3, on Monday.

The unveiling marks a significant step in Musk’s push to compete with leading AI models, including OpenAI’s GPT-4o, Google’s Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude 3.5, and DeepSeek’s V3.

During a live streamed event on Musk’s social media platform, X, xAI leaders claimed that Grok 3 surpasses its competitors in math, science, and coding benchmarks.

However, they provided limited information on how it compares to other advanced reasoning models, such as OpenAI’s o3-mini and DeepSeek R1.

The new model boasts key enhancements, including deep web search capabilities, an ability to code online games, and a “big brain” mode designed to solve complex problems with greater accuracy.

Expanding Access to AI Technology

Grok 3 is now available to subscribers of X’s “Premium+” plan, which costs $40 per month. Users can also access it through Grok’s standalone app or website, offering a direct path to the latest AI capabilities.

The launch arrives as AI competition intensifies, with tech giants investing in more powerful data centers to support increasingly advanced models. Companies view AI as a transformative force that will redefine how people search for information, write code, and interact with digital platforms. Musk has positioned xAI as a formidable player in this evolving space, emphasizing Grok 3’s advanced infrastructure and performance improvements.

Challenging the Status Quo

Musk revealed that xAI built Grok 3 using ten times the computing power of its predecessor, Grok 2, following the opening of a new data center in Tennessee. This significant boost in resources signals Musk’s commitment to competing with AI heavyweights and addressing the growing demand for more efficient AI solutions.

At the same time, xAI faces increasing competition from Chinese startup DeepSeek, which recently launched the R1 model. DeepSeek’s rapid advancements have raised questions about Silicon Valley’s AI investment strategies, as the company demonstrates that powerful models can be developed with greater efficiency. The global AI race is no longer just about building stronger models but also about optimizing the process behind their development.

Grok 3: A Work in Progress

Musk acknowledged that Grok 3 remains in a beta phase. “Expect some imperfections at first, but we’ll improve it rapidly,” he assured users. He also teased an upcoming “voice mode” for Grok 3, which will allow for more natural, real-time interactions—an addition that aligns with similar features in ChatGPT and other leading AI platforms.

Beyond AI innovation, Musk continues to expand his influence in both business and politics. As a “special government employee” under President Donald Trump, he has played a role in shaping federal policies on technology and infrastructure. His ambitions in the AI sector extend beyond xAI’s immediate success.

The OpenAI Rivalry

Musk’s latest AI move comes amid his ongoing feud with OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman. Last week, Musk led a $97 billion bid to acquire OpenAI, which its board rejected. He has repeatedly criticized OpenAI for shifting away from its original nonprofit mission and urged the company to open-source more of its technology.

When asked whether xAI would open-source Grok 3, Musk confirmed that the previous model, Grok 2, would be made publicly available once Grok 3 reaches a stable and mature phase in the coming months. His push for transparency reflects broader industry debates over AI ethics and accessibility.

With Grok 3 now in the hands of early adopters, the tech world eagerly watches how it performs against industry leaders. Will Musk’s latest AI breakthrough live up to its promise, or will it struggle to stand out in an increasingly crowded market?
