Milan / Mumbai — Italian luxury fashion house Prada is preparing to launch a limited-edition line of “Made in India” leather sandals priced at approximately $930 (€800), following criticism over cultural appropriation earlier this year. The footwear, inspired by India’s traditional Kolhapuri chappals, will be produced in collaboration with artisan groups in Maharashtra and Karnataka.

The move comes after Prada showcased sandals during Milan Fashion Week that closely resembled the traditional Indian design, prompting backlash from artisans, cultural advocates, and political figures who argued that the brand had not sufficiently acknowledged the craft’s origins.

Collaboration With Indian Artisan Bodies

In response, Prada has partnered with two state-supported organizations:

  • Sant Rohidas Leather Industries & Charmakar Development Corporation (LIDCOM)
  • Dr. Babu Jagjivan Ram Leather Industries Development Corporation (LIDKAR)

Under these agreements, artisans will work directly with Prada to craft the upcoming collection. According to the groups involved, the initiative aims to promote traditional leatherwork, provide international exposure for craftsmen, and support long-term skill development.

Prada confirmed that the sandals will be produced in India using local craftsmanship combined with the brand’s own manufacturing standards. A total of 2,000 pairs will be released globally.

Global Release in February 2026

The limited-edition sandals are scheduled for release in February 2026 through:

  • 40 Prada boutiques worldwide
  • The brand’s official online store

The company stated that the project forms part of a broader cultural collaboration and is not tied to plans for new clothing factories or retail expansions in India.

Training and Skills Development

The initiative includes a three-year partnership programme designed to provide training for Indian artisans. Selected craftsmen will have opportunities to participate in short training sessions at Prada’s Academy in Italy, focusing on advanced techniques and craftsmanship standards.

Representatives from the artisan bodies expressed optimism that the collaboration could increase global demand for traditional Kolhapuri-style footwear and create new economic opportunities for local communities.

Industry Response

The launch is being closely watched within the luxury sector as brands face growing scrutiny over cultural sourcing and design inspiration. Prada’s collaboration is seen as an effort to address concerns directly by formally recognizing the origins of the design and involving the communities whose craft inspired the collection.
