K-pop sensation NewJeans took the stage at ComplexCon Hong Kong on Sunday night, performing for an electrified crowd of 11,000 fans. The group delivered an unforgettable set and even debuted a new song, but the night took an emotional turn when they announced they would be pausing all activities.

Their decision comes just days after the Seoul Central District Court ruled in favor of their record label, Ador, in a legal battle over the group’s contract. The court granted Ador an injunction that prevents NewJeans from engaging in independent music or commercial projects. The ruling is a major setback for the five-member group, which has been fighting to break away from the label under a new identity, NJZ.

On stage, member Hanni addressed the audience, expressing how difficult the decision to pause had been. “This wasn’t an easy choice,” she said. “But we believe it’s something we need to do out of respect for the ruling.” Each member then read prepared messages in both Korean and English, delivering heartfelt words that left many fans visibly emotional.

The court’s decision is the latest development in an ongoing dispute between NewJeans and Ador. The group has alleged mistreatment by the label, claiming they faced manipulation, miscommunication, and workplace harassment. Ador, a subsidiary of K-pop giant Hybe (home to BTS and other major acts), has denied the accusations. The company insists that NewJeans remains under contract and cannot pursue entertainment activities without its approval.

The lawsuit, filed by Ador, is set for a full hearing on April 3. Until then, the injunction bars the group from rebranding or working independently, reinforcing Ador’s control over their careers.

Emotional Response from Fans

NewJeans’ announcement came as a shock to many fans at the AsiaWorld-Expo venue. The group had just finished a set filled with solo covers and the debut of their new song, Pit Stop, before revealing their decision to step back.

Danni, another member of the group, acknowledged the toll the situation has taken on them. “As strong as we are trying to stay, it is honestly taking a bit of a mental and emotional toll on us,” she said.

Fans, who call themselves “bunnies,” responded with a mix of disappointment and support. Some cried as they listened to the group’s words, while others shouted words of encouragement.

“I hope they can stay strong and fight this battle well,” said 25-year-old fan Soie So. “We know this is going to be hard to win, but I believe in them.”

Despite the legal restrictions, NewJeans subtly referenced their NJZ identity throughout the performance. The name appeared briefly in stage visuals, and some members wore tights with the phrase “Chapter NJZ.” Meanwhile, festival booths sold NJZ-branded merchandise, including plush keychains, hats, and T-shirts. Some fans waited in line for hours to purchase the limited-edition items.

A Legal Setback with Uncertain Consequences

While NewJeans has gained overwhelming support from fans, legal experts believe the court’s ruling signals a weak case for the group.

“In cases where agencies seek injunctions against artists, South Korean courts tend to favor the artist,” said Sangrock Kho, a lawyer with Law Firm Pil. “Courts are extremely reluctant to issue orders that restrict an artist’s freedom to work. The fact that the court ruled in favor of Ador suggests that NewJeans’ argument—that the breakdown in trust was entirely caused by Hybe and Ador—lacks sufficient legal basis.”

This ruling contrasts with past cases where idols successfully left their agencies over unfair contracts. However, Hybe’s strong legal standing and the group’s existing contract may have played a role in the decision. If the April 3 hearing upholds the injunction, NewJeans may have no choice but to continue working under Ador or face further legal consequences.

From Global Stardom to Uncertain Future

NewJeans’ rise to fame has been meteoric. Debuting in 2022, the group quickly topped South Korea’s charts with their song Attention. Within a year, they achieved global success with their EP Get Up, which featured the viral hit Super Shy and reached No. 1 on the US Billboard 200. Their fresh sound, combined with a unique Y2K-inspired aesthetic, set them apart in the crowded K-pop landscape.

But their ongoing legal battle with Ador now threatens to overshadow their musical success.

Ador has insisted that its management of NewJeans has been fair, calling the group’s allegations “misunderstandings.” In an emailed statement to CNN before the Hong Kong concert, the company expressed support for the performance, provided that the group performed under the name NewJeans rather than NJZ.

During the event, the group appeared to comply with this request, as their name was notably absent from the large screens that introduced other festival acts. However, their subtle NJZ references made it clear they are still seeking independence.

What’s Next for NewJeans?

With the April 3 hearing approaching, the future of NewJeans remains uncertain. The group has now officially stepped away from the spotlight, leaving fans wondering what their next move will be.

Despite the legal obstacles, their message to fans remained hopeful. “No matter what our name is, no matter what kind of tough times we’ve been through,” Danni said, “sharing moments like this with you all is what we live for.”

For now, supporters of NewJeans will have to wait and see if the group can overcome this legal battle—or if their pause turns into something more permanent.
