Pope Francis continues his recovery at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where he is undergoing therapy and medical treatment. On Sunday, the Holy See Press Office reported that the Pope’s condition remains stable with slight improvements, but doctors remain cautious about his overall prognosis.
Despite his hospitalization, the 86-year-old pontiff followed the Spiritual Exercises of the Roman Curia via video link. These reflections, led by Fr. Roberto Pasolini, OFM Cap, began Sunday afternoon in the Paul VI Hall at the Vatican.
In the morning, Pope Francis received visits from Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, and Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, the Substitute for the Secretariat of State. He also celebrated Mass with his caregivers.
The Pope continues respiratory and motor physiotherapy while adhering to a prescribed diet, which now includes solid foods. As part of his treatment plan, he will undergo non-invasive mechanical ventilation overnight after using high-flow oxygen therapy during the day.
A new medical bulletin is expected Monday evening, as none was released Sunday due to the Pope’s stable condition.
Earlier in the day, Pope Francis shared his Angelus address in written form, thanking the medical staff for their dedication. He also prayed for those suffering from illness and acknowledged the compassionate care of healthcare workers worldwide.
“During my prolonged hospitalization here,” he said, “I too experience the thoughtfulness of service and the tenderness of care, in particular from the doctors and healthcare workers, whom I thank from the bottom of my heart.”
His words offered a message of hope and gratitude, highlighting the importance of care and faith in times of illness.
