Kim Kardashian Celebrates Legal Milestone After Six-Year Journey
Kim Kardashian just hit a major milestone in her journey to becoming a lawyer. On Wednesday, she shared photos and videos of what appeared to be her own backyard graduation ceremony.
In a video posted on Instagram, a voice—likely her sister Khloé Kardashian—is heard saying, “Surprise graduation!” The moment marked a celebration of six years of hard work, dedication, and legal studies.
Jessica Jackson, a lawyer who mentored Kardashian, praised her perseverance during the ceremony. “It’s an absolute honor to stand here today,” Jackson said. “Not just as mentors, but as witnesses to one of the most inspiring legal journeys we’ve ever seen.”
Kardashian began her legal education in 2019 through California’s Law Office Study Program. The program allows students to study under a practicing attorney instead of attending law school. “Six years ago, Kim Kardashian walked into this program with nothing but a fierce desire to fight for justice,” Jackson added.
Jackson also detailed the extent of Kardashian’s commitment. “She dedicated a total of 5,184 hours of legal study,” she said. “That’s time she carved out while raising four children, running multiple businesses, filming television shows, and advocating in courtrooms.”
Kardashian’s legal journey began with a passion for criminal justice reform. Her advocacy has led to tangible change. Most notably, she helped secure the release of Alice Marie Johnson, a nonviolent drug offender. Johnson had served 21 years before Kardashian appealed to President Donald Trump to commute her sentence. Trump granted the commutation in 2018 and issued a full pardon in 2020.
“I knew I had to do more than post online,” Kardashian told Time magazine in a 2022 interview. “If I wanted to help change laws and fight injustice, I had to understand the law.”
In addition to her legal studies, Kardashian continues to fund and promote justice reform through her nonprofit initiatives. She has supported the 90 Days of Freedom campaign, which aims to release people serving unjust sentences. According to the campaign, they have helped free more than 40 individuals since 2019.
The graduation celebration was personal. In one image, Kardashian stood on stage holding her certificate of completion. Her friends and family surrounded her, clapping and cheering. Another photo showed her late father, Robert Kardashian, in a framed portrait. Robert Kardashian was a well-known attorney and a member of O.J. Simpson’s defense team in the 1995 trial.
“I know my dad would be so proud,” she wrote in the caption. “He’s the reason I found my passion in law.”
While Kardashian’s journey has received mixed reactions from the public, legal professionals have acknowledged her commitment. “Her hours and dedication show she took this seriously,” said Loyola Law School professor Laurie Levenson. “She’s not just wearing a suit and taking pictures. She’s doing the work.”
Kardashian still has one major hurdle to cross. She must pass the California bar exam before she can officially practice law. The state’s bar exam is known as one of the most challenging in the country, with a pass rate of just 32.5% in February 2024, according to the State Bar of California.
Still, those close to her believe she’ll succeed.
“Kim has already done the impossible,” Jackson said. “The bar exam is just the final step.”
Kardashian closed the ceremony with a simple message: “I’m just getting started.”
