Luka Dončić made his highly anticipated debut for the Los Angeles Lakers in spectacular fashion, helping his new team dominate the Utah Jazz with a commanding 132-113 victory on Monday night.

The energy inside Crypto.com Arena was electric as fans welcomed the 25-year-old superstar, who arrived in Los Angeles following a blockbuster trade on February 2. Lakers faithful, clad in No. 77 Dončić T-shirts handed out in celebration, roared with excitement as their new franchise player took the court.

“It was special,” Dončić said of his first game in the Lakers' purple and gold. “The way they received me, the energy in the building—it was amazing. I was nervous before the game, which doesn’t happen often, but once I stepped on the court, everything felt natural.”

Returning from a left calf strain that sidelined him since Christmas Day, Dončić showed some rust but still managed to make an impact. He finished with 14 points on 5-of-14 shooting, adding five rebounds and four assists in 24 minutes of play. He wasted no time scoring his first Lakers bucket, draining a three-pointer from the top of the key early in the first quarter, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

The five-time All-NBA selection shared the floor with LeBron James, who led the Lakers with a game-high 24 points, along with eight assists and seven rebounds. James, who warmed up in a No. 77 Dončić T-shirt, had words of encouragement for his new teammate before tipoff.

“Don’t fit in,” James told Dončić. “Fit the f**k out.”

Dončić later reflected on James' advice, saying, “It meant a lot to hear that from him. It gave me confidence, and after that speech, I had chills. I’m just happy to be part of this team.”

Lakers Extend Winning Streak as Stars Shine

The game itself was never in doubt, as the Lakers, ranked fourth in the Western Conference, extended their winning streak to six games. The Jazz, struggling this season, had no answer for Los Angeles' balanced attack.

The night wasn’t just about basketball—it was a spectacle. A-list celebrities, including Adele, Will Ferrell, and members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, packed the arena to witness Dončić’s debut. Among the notable attendees was Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki, who made a surprise appearance.

“I will always be a Mav for life, but I had to be here for my guy,” Nowitzki said. “Luka is special, and this is a big moment for him.”

With the first game of his Lakers career behind him, Dončić now sets his sights on Wednesday’s rematch against the Jazz in Salt Lake City, as the Lakers continue their push up the standings.

Mavericks Fans Protest Dončić Trade Amid Injury Woes

While Lakers fans celebrated, Dallas Mavericks supporters made their frustrations loud and clear. The shocking trade that sent Dončić to Los Angeles in exchange for nine-time All-Star Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick has not been well received in Dallas.

Before Saturday’s game at American Airlines Center, Mavericks fans gathered outside in protest. Discontent escalated on Monday when multiple fans were ejected from the arena during Dallas' 129-128 overtime loss to the Sacramento Kings. According to a team spokesperson, the removals were due to violations of the NBA’s code of conduct.

Two of the ejected fans held signs reading “Fire Nico,” referring to Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison. Another fan, wearing Dončić’s Slovenian national team jersey, was removed after engaging in a heated exchange with Mavs minority owner Mark Cuban. The incident underscored the growing divide between the Mavericks' front office and their fan base.

Compounding the frustration, Dallas' injury troubles deepened when starting center Daniel Gafford suffered a right knee sprain in Monday's game. He now joins a growing injury list that includes Davis, Dereck Lively II, and Dwight Powell, leaving the Mavericks severely depleted in the frontcourt.

What’s Next for Dončić and the Lakers?

With Dončić now officially in purple and gold, expectations are sky-high in Los Angeles. His chemistry with James and Anthony Davis will be crucial in the Lakers' pursuit of another championship.

But while Lakers fans dream of a title, Mavericks supporters continue to question the decision that sent their franchise player to Hollywood. Was this blockbuster trade the right move for both teams, or will Dallas regret letting go of their generational superstar?
